Rectify Missed Infusion Stop Times with PULSE Coding Automation Technology™
A major U.S. healthcare system reduced its infusion missed stop times by 82.5%, safeguarding nearly $2.5 million every month.
In 2020, a major U.S. health system with over 50 hospitals and more than 600 healthcare facilities integrated PULSE Coding Automation Technology™ to improve its internal medical coding processes and address staffing shortages. Initially, the health system focused on automated medical coding for ED facility E&M services, observation bedside procedures, and diagnosis code assignments. After two years of success, finding $504 million in net new revenue, the health system expanded its coding capabilities with PULSE in 2022 to include the infusions and injections (I&I) module, automating the calculation and coding of these procedures.
Impact of PULSE I&I Module
CorroHealth partnered with the health system to strategically plan and roll out the I&I module in stages across five different markets, each containing multiple facilities. The process was carefully executed and involved monitoring monthly metrics and making process adjustments at each facility. As the CorroHealth team implemented the module, they collaborated closely with the facilities to solve a critical issue—missed stop times during infusion administrations.
Thanks to the analytical capabilities of PULSE, the team was able to pinpoint exactly where the process was falling short. When infusion stop times are missed, the hospital is unable to bill the procedure in full, leading to a lower reimbursement rate and substantial revenue loss. While missed stop times can sometimes be dismissed as a small hiccup, data shows they have significant financial implications.
Across all five markets, this health system lost nearly $3.5 million in revenue in just one month due to missing 14.6% of its infusion stop times for both inpatient and outpatient I&I services. This illustrates the critical importance of addressing and rectifying this issue. Recognizing the urgency, CorroHealth supported the health system’s senior leadership in developing targeted internal education and training programs to improve their nurses’ documentation practices.
