PULSE by CorroHealth Boosts Efficiency and Finds $504M in Revenue for a Top U.S. Health System
In 2020, within the sprawling corridors of one of the largest health systems in the U.S., the once-resilient heartbeat of emergency medical coding began to experience significant challenges. The health system’s executive leadership found itself at a crossroads, facing a monumental challenge with its existing technology and complex workflows.
The challenge was as immense as it was multifaceted. With hundreds of thousands of emergency visits per month, a tangled workflow was managed through a combination of their EHR’s auto charge selection, nurses, and medical coders. The heavy workload and inefficient workflows became a cumbersome burden for staff. The system’s revenue was at stake, creating an urgent need for an effective, streamlined solution.
A Risk-Free Examination Reveals Untapped Potential
Recognizing the critical situation faced by the health system, CorroHealth stepped in, ready to revitalize the core of the organization’s medical coding and billing processes. They proposed a no-obligation assessment to showcase their expertise. Bringing together over a century of collective experience in medical coding and technological innovation, CorroHealth introduced PULSE – its next-generation, AI-driven platform for medical coding automation. The platform is a result of advanced technological development guided by clinical experts. Its purpose is to increase efficiency, productivity, and revenue integrity.
In pursuing revenue integrity, the health system’s executive team was crucial in steering the course toward an effective solution. An in-depth analysis performed by the CorroHealth team, which included a review of 800 patient charts that uncovered a wealth of untapped revenue potential. The proof was in the numbers, and the hospital network’s executive team saw what was possible. This moment of realization started a significant transformation for the health system in partnership with CorroHealth. With PULSE at the helm, the journey to revitalize the system’s clinical revenue cycle began, setting the stage for profound changes and advancements in their financial health.
- 90% of all charts are automated
- 98% accuracy rate in E/M & Obs
- 70% decrease in TAT for charts needing human intervention
- 5% missing stop time rate for I&I
- 23% increase in net new revenue
- $504M in total new revenue and growing since 2020
Breathing Life into Healthcare Operations with PULSE
The implementation of PULSE began with a full-service automation scope, taking over the coding process and handling fallouts and submissions. The ED facility medical coding automation for E/M procedures, injections and infusions, observation automation for bedside procedures, and ICD-10 Diagnosis were implemented quickly. As the integration with the various Health Information Systems (HIS) platforms unfolded, PULSE began to prove itself, and the health system saw results within 90 days. It was a seamless transition that took the existing tangled system and streamlined it into a single path of automation.
However, the team at CorroHealth went beyond the initial implementation. Diving deep into the health system’s operations, the team identified and addressed critical issues, such as documentation around wound care and medication and potential ED downgrades. They even redesigned the Critical Care process through a detailed client support model incorporated into high-visibility encounters.
Success in Rhythm
Implementing CorroHealth’s PULSE was like the first beat of a revitalized heart. A resounding rhythm of growth, accuracy, and excellence began to echo throughout the health system.
The signs of success were palpable. Annual gross revenue soared by $504 million, and the net revenue increase per patient was a tangible $30.25, a 23 % increase. The system’s efficiency reached new heights, with the turnaround time on charts requiring human intervention plummeting to just 21.3 hours. Once a concern, the accuracy rates now proudly stand at 98%. Previous accuracy rates in Emergency procedures were 85.5 % and dismal 59.4 % in observation procedures. The missing stop-time rate for injections and infusions had been reduced to 5%.
But perhaps the most profound triumph was in the automation itself. The network had managed to automate over 90% of the charts, proving PULSE to be a touchless coding automation platform, effectively minimizing human intervention.
Operational Heartbeat Restored
PULSE by CorroHealth was more than just a solution; it was the beginning of a new era. PULSE breathed life into the health system’s coding operations, setting its rhythm back to continuous growth, echoing the innovation. However, the real magic happened within the collaboration between CorroHealth and the health system. It became a partnership built on mutual understanding, trust, and shared goals. By working together, the health system’s results were nothing short of remarkable. The heartbeat of their operations was restored, now stronger, more resilient, and ready to face the future with renewed vigor and excellence.
